Q: What is Role Playing?

A: Role Playing is improvisational theatre around the dining room table. The Game Master (or GM) sets the scenario, and the Players interact with the GM and each other in the personnae of their Player Characters (or PCs). The GM portrays all Non-Player Characters (or NPCs) that the PCs interact with. Sometimes dice are used to determine whether a character succeeds or fails at something he or she is trying to do and what the result of his or her action is, but more often than not, at least with our groups, the game is more cooperative story-telling than dice rolling.

Q: Is Role Playing demonic or dangerous?

A: No, Role Playing is not inherantly demonic or dangerous. There are people out there who take the game too far, but they are few and far between. Unfortunately, they also receive the most press. Handled responsibly, Role Playing is a great way to escape into another world and be someone else with different problems for a few hours, and it is a lot of fun for all involved.

A: The difference is the genre. Like a fantasy novel, Fantasy Role Playing is set in a world where dragons and magic exist, similar to the world created by J.R.R. Tolkein for his Lord of the Rings saga, or the world created by Laurell K. Hamilton for her Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter series (though that could also fall into the horror genre). Role Playing is done through the combined efforts of the imagination of the Players and the Game Master, and the setting can be -- quite literally -- any time, any place, real or imagined, with or without magic, super hero abilities, dragons, elves, vampires, werewolves... you name it! That is the fun of Role Playing.

Q: What do you need to play?

A: The most important component you need for Role Playing is your imagination. Without that, you cannot successfully Role Play. Aside from a good imagination, there are several published rule books for various types of Role Playing. Each rulebook requires different types of polyhedral dice for character creation, but a basic set will include:
